North Country Trail

The NCT or North Country Trail system runs through the entire state of Michigan. The Hiking North/Central Michigan group will be using many sections of their trail system for our Hikes. In fact, our first Hike skirts a section of the Trail around the Pere Marquette river. We just recieved an email from one of the coordinators of a Chapter of the Organization. Thought you North/Central members would be interested in this. Check out their web site and the various Chapters for the different regions of the Trail system. This particular section is in the U.P.

NORTH COUNTRY TRAIL ASSOCIATION TRAIL CHALLENGE

The Superior Shoreline Chapter of the North Country Trail Association maintains a section of the 4700 mile North Country National Scenic Trail.  The section, arguably one of the most beautiful along the entire trail, commences at the mouth of the Two Hearted River on the east proceeding along the shore of Lake Superior, through Pictured Rocks and Munising, then proceeding to Rock River Road west of Munising.  Other than Pictured Rocks few have, however, hiked more than a few short segments of the trail and thus have without knowing it experienced sensory deprivation.  The natural remedy to cure this malady is to hike more section of the trail.  To foster this, the Superior Shoreline Chapter has created a Trail Challenge.  Waypointed maps of the sections of the trail on either side of Pictured Rocks (the Grand Marais & Munising sections) appear on the Chapter’s web site, www.northcountrytrail.org/ssc.  Further instruction and downloadable GPX files are found at the web site.  The Chapter challenges its members, friends and all hikers to accept the challenge of hiking more segments of its trail.  To recognize that effort, as one hikes a section of the trail identified by the waypoints and emails his or her name to the Chapter, ssc@northcountrytrail.org, indentifying the segment hiked and the date that the hike took place, the Chapter will list the achievement in the chart that also appears on the web site.  The first hiker to complete a hike of both the Grand Marais and Munising sections will receive a reward from the Chapter.  There is no deadline to commence or complete one or more segment hikes.
